After selecting an inexpensive carrier, I waited two weeks and discovered that unless I paid more, it was unlikely that a driver would agree to take my car. I was running out of time and I read the online reviews on Top Notch and it seemed like their customers had good experience with the company. So I called Top Notch, agreed to the price, and within one day a driver called me and scheduled the pick up for the next day. They said they would deliver it in one week, and they did exactly that. CA to NY. On time, no damage. I would use Top Notch again. I have two more vehicles to ship - maybe I can get a discount.

The car transport business model is unusual to say the least. But I doubt it will change any time soon. Rather than shopping for a lower price, I recommend shopping for a good reputation - if you care about your car and your time.
