Quoted $1,400, ended up paying over $2,100

I used Nexus Auto Transport to ship my car from Los Angeles to Virginia and was quoted a little over $1,400. From there, the experience was a string of communication failures that cost me hundreds of dollars. No one from Nexus ever called to confirm my order details after booking. A few days before the scheduled pickup, I emailed asking for an update and was told they were still looking for a carrier. On the day of pickup, a dispatcher called to say they were still searching but not to worry, it was a "popular route." Two hours later, a different dispatcher called to say the only carrier they'd found would charge $1,800, $400 over my quote. Because I had a hard deadline (I was leaving town), I felt pressured to accept, but asked them to keep looking for something cheaper. I never heard back; the next update I got was that the $1,800 carrier had simply been booked. When the driver arrived two hours after the pickup window, he saw items in my back seat and said that would be an extra $300, a fee I was never told about. When I called Nexus, I was told there was nothing they could do and that I "should have" disclosed this. When I checked the intake form they had me fill out, there was no question about items in the vehicle. A rep named Alexei told me that information is supposed to be collected during a confirmation call from a dispatcher, a call I never received, which he acknowledged was an error on their end. Despite admitting the error, Alexei said Nexus couldn't refund anything because they hadn't taken a cut on the $1,800 booking, and offered a $100 "restaurant gift card" as the only resolution. I asked twice for the manager's contact info before it was actually provided. A colleague named Adrian eventually called instead of the manager, admitted the lack of dispatcher contact was a lapse on their end, and raised the gift card offer to $300, still framed as compensation only for the surprise $300 item fee, not for the extra $400 I was forced into for the carrier itself. To make it worse, the "gift card" isn't a usable gift card at all. It's a points-based online platform good for small percentage-off coupons (think $20 off a $75 purchase) at a short list of 7 to 9 restaurants in my area. It in no way makes up for the roughly $700 in extra costs I incurred compared to what I would have paid using my usual car transport company, Montway. Between the lack of proactive communication, a booked carrier that came in $400 over quote, an undisclosed $300 item fee, and a "resolution" that amounts to a discount coupon, I would not recommend Nexus Auto Transport.
